Make a Hug
So, what is a ‘Quilty’ Hug?
Our quilts are sized to wrap around you, so you get a quilty hug and are therefore longer and narrower than a regular bed sized quilt.
They are designed to be grabbed with a hand at each end and hugged around the body, and still be able to walk without tripping over!
The width should be between 40” and 50” and the length should be between 66” and 72”, but if in doubt please Contact Us.
The finished shape will be a long Rectangle not a Square.
A good rule of thumb is, if the top is at least 20” longer than it is wide.
See diagram below:
Top tips for making your hug
- Please use 100% quilting weight cotton as far as possible. Do not use curtaining or upholstery fabric in your quilt. Tops made with denim e.g. rag quilts, are acceptable, but please ensure seams are adequate to prevent fraying at the seams.
- We try and avoid using designs of houses/homes as this may act as a ‘trigger’ for some young people who have been in care.
- Don’t include any licensed fabrics in your quilts (such as Marvel, Disney, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter etc), as these fabrics are sold for personal use only.
- If using fleece as backing, wadding is not always required but quilting must support those seams on the top.
- Quilting can be as simple as you like but close enough to support the seams of the top. If in doubt we suggest quilting about a fist width apart. Use either 80/20 wadding or needle punched polyester – but not upholstery weight or high loft, and an appropriate backing but not so dense that the hug won’t drape. If you would like advice on this, don’t hesitate to Contact Us.
Here is some information on how many blocks are required
We also have a long-arming service
If quilting your top is something you don’t enjoy, we can offer a longarming service for you. Tops need to be accompanied by a backing 8” wider and 8” longer than the top and enough binding to cover the perimeter of the hug plus at least 12”. Once received, it will be placed in a queue to be long-armed, and we have a team of finishers who will complete the binding process and attach a Q4CL label. There is a £10.00 charge to cover wadding and thread, this can be paid in person or via bank transfer, please Contact Us for bank details.
We have a central stock of labels, so all completed quilts will be labelled once they have been received. This is to enable us to take a photograph in exactly the same location, so that the presentation of each hug on the portal is identical. It is at this stage that we will allocate a number to the hug.
A cardboard tag with a personal message can be attached to your quilt, please only use your first name.
